OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research and development company, founded in 2015 by a group of visionary entrepreneurs, investors, and scientists (including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and others).
Their mission is to create safe and beneficial AI that can benefit all of humanity, without being constrained by financial or political interests. They also aim to ensure that AI is aligned with human values and can be controlled by humans.
OpenAI is not your typical company
It is actually composed of two entities: a non-profit organization called OpenAI Incorporated and a for-profit subsidiary called OpenAI Limited Partnership.
The non-profit conducts fundamental research and publishes its findings and code openly for anyone to use and learn from.

- DALL-E: A generative model that can create realistic images from complex text prompts. Example prompts: “a cat wearing a hat” or “a skyscraper made of cheese“.
- OpenAI Five: A team of five neural networks that learned to play the popular video game Dota 2 at a professional level, by playing millions of games against itself and other players.
- ChatGPT: A conversational model that can interact with humans in a natural and engaging way. ChatGPT can answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.
- OpenAI Codex: A system that can generate high-quality code from natural language descriptions or examples. OpenAI Codex can also explain its code, fix bugs, optimize performance, and suggest improvements.

Partnering With Others
OpenAI has also partnered with several companies to apply its AI technology to various domains and industries:
- Microsoft: The tech giant invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and $10 billion in 2023 to support its research and development. Microsoft also provides OpenAI with access to its Azure cloud computing platform, where OpenAI runs its AI systems.
- Shopify: The e-commerce platform integrated OpenAI’s GPT-4 model into its online store builder, allowing merchants to create product descriptions, slogans, logos, and more with just a few clicks.
