Adobe AI Firefly: The Future of Creative Generative AI
6 min readAdobe, the global leader in creative software, is developing a new family of creative generative AI models called Firefly. It is designed to help creators experiment, imagine, and create an infinite range of images, text effects, color variations, and more with simple text prompts. Firefly is powered by Adobe Sensei, the company’s artificial intelligence and machine learning platform.
Firefly is currently in beta and available as a web app and as an embedded model inside some Adobe apps, such as Photoshop and Illustrator.

Adobe AI Firefly’s Capabilities
Firefly offers different tools for different creative needs, such as:
- Text to image: Generate images from a detailed text description.
- Generative fill: Use a brush to remove objects or paint in new ones.
- Text effects: Apply styles or textures to words and phrases.
- Generative recolor: Generate color variations of your vector artwork.
- 3D to image: Generate images from the interactive positioning of 3D elements.
- Extend image: Change the aspect ratio of your image with a single click.
Firefly is not only a fun and easy way to create stunning visuals, but also a practical advantage for creators who want to use their content commercially. Once Firefly is out of its beta stage, creators will have the option to use content generated in it commercially. As Firefly evolves, Adobe expects to offer creators a choice of different Firefly models designed for different uses.
Adobe is also committed to developing creative generative AI responsibly, with creators at the center. The company is working toward a universal “Do Not Train” Content Credentials tag that will remain associated with a piece of content wherever it’s used, published, or stored. This tag will allow creators to protect their original content from being used to train generative AI models without their consent.
Firefly is just the beginning of Adobe’s vision for creative generative AI. The company has big plans for it, such as generating custom vectors, brushes, and textures from text prompts, altering the weather in a video with a few words, or turning simple 3D designs into photorealistic images and quickly creating new styles and variations.
Adobe Illustrator, the industry-leading vector graphics software, is also integrating Firefly generative AI into its features. Illustrator users can now create beautiful vector art and illustrations with just a few words, unlock endless color combinations, and make eye-popping text effects. Illustrator is available for desktop and iPad, and offers a 7-day free trial for new users.

More Adobe Magic
Firefly is not the only AI innovation that Adobe is offering to its customers. Adobe has also unveiled new AI capabilities that maximize creativity and precision across Creative Cloud apps and Adobe Express, the leading all-in-one tool for anyone to quickly create professional-quality content that stands out.
Some of these AI capabilities include:
- Photo Restoration (beta): A new Photoshop Neural Filter that enables game-changing time savings with complex tasks, using machine learning to intelligently eliminate scratches and other minor imperfections on old photographs.
- Select People: A new Adobe Lightroom tool that automatically detects a person within a photograph, then creates masks specific to their facial skin, body skin, eyebrow, sclera, iris/pupil, lips, teeth, mouth and hair.
- Quick Actions: New AI-powered additions in Adobe Express that give creators access to functionality from Adobe’s flagship creative tools, including Photoshop and Illustrator. These include instantly resizing videos and images for quick sharing on social media, finding ideal color palettes for maximum visual impact, and quickly canvassing over 22,000 Adobe Fonts for the perfect typeface.
- Selection improvements: New features in Photoshop that enable users to hover over, detect and make detailed selections of complex objects with a single click, creating higher quality and more accurate selections of elements such as skies, foregrounds, subjects and hair – all while preserving detailed edges.
- One-Click Delete and Fill: A new feature in Photoshop that selects and removes objects from images, filling the removed area using content-aware fill, all in a single action.
Adobe AI is the future of creative generative AI. With Firefly and other Creative Cloud apps, Adobe is giving creators every advantage – not just creatively, but practically. Adobe AI is helping creators expand upon their natural creativity and make anything they want, sharp at every size.
Firefly and Other Adobe AI Models – The Difference
The difference is that Firefly is a family of creative generative AI models that can create images, text effects, color variations, and more from simple text prompts. Firefly is trained on licensed and public domain content, and it tags its outputs with Content Authenticity Initiative metadata to ensure transparency and attribution. Firefly is also integrated into Adobe Creative Cloud apps and Adobe Express, offering a range of tools for different creative needs and workflows.
Other Adobe AI models are more specialized and focused on specific tasks or domains, such as:
- Photoshop Neural Filters: A collection of AI-powered filters that can enhance, alter, or generate realistic images in Photoshop. For example, Photo Restoration can remove scratches and imperfections from old photos, Colorize can add color to black-and-white images, and Smart Portrait can change facial expressions, age, gaze, and hair thickness.
- Lightroom Select People: A tool that can automatically detect and mask people in photos, allowing users to apply adjustments to specific parts of the person, such as skin tone, eye color, hair color, and teeth whitening.
- Illustrator Recolor Artwork: A feature that can generate color variations of vector artwork based on color themes, harmony rules, or mood boards. Users can also edit individual colors or apply global adjustments to the artwork.
- Premiere Pro Speech to Text: A feature that can automatically generate transcripts from videos and sync them with the audio. Users can also edit the transcripts, add captions, or export them as text files.
- InDesign Content-Aware Fit: A feature that can intelligently fit an image into a frame by detecting the most important part of the image and cropping out the rest. Users can also adjust the fit manually or use other options such as Fill Frame Proportionally or Fit Content Proportionally.
